(MSK Ep. 03) The Buy-One-Get-One Secret Even the Store Manager Won't Tell You
Here's my declaration.
At the store yesterday, a child saw a bag of chips with a Buy-One-Get-One sticker and dropped it straight into the cart. They never even glanced at the price tag.
The parent didn't think twice, either, and simply walked to the register. In that moment, no one asked what the real price actually was.
Starting today, that cart gets filled differently.
Why Does Seeing "Buy One, Get One" Make Your Hands Move First?
The moment you see the word "bundle," the math stops. Your heart moves before you ever compare the numbers. One red sticker has more power than the price tag itself.
Put a big bag of chips next to a small one, and the big bag looks like the better deal every time. But bag size and the amount inside are two completely different things.
Sometimes, the bigger the package, the more air it holds. One quick check, and they become a kid who sees past the illusion.
Does a Buy-One-Get-One Sticker Really Mean the Second One's Free?
The BOGO price is already baked into the price of a single item. Sometimes, the price gets raised first, and then the items get bundled together.
Say a pizza place offers a free can of soda with every pizza. In reality, the price of that soda is often already tucked into the price of the pizza.
Buy-one-get-one works the same way. The second item isn't really free — the cost was already worked into the price of the first.
One more question, and they become a kid who catches the hidden math.
Why Do You Feel Like You'll Lose Out If You Don't Grab It Now?
The moment you spot that sticker, your brain has already reached for the cart. You don't even give yourself a moment to stop and check.
It's the same feeling as seeing "sale ending soon" online and clicking buy before you even know why you're rushing.
Loss aversion — that feeling in a game when "grab it now or it's gone" flashes on the screen, and your hand moves before you know why. (The fear of losing out if you miss it.)
One quick check, and they become a kid who can stop that fear in its tracks.
So How Do You Know If It's Actually a Good Deal?
There's no way to tell just by looking. Divide the bundle price by the number of items, and you get the exact price per piece.
You don't even need a calculator — your fingers will do.
One round of division, and they become a kid who sees the numbers no one else notices.
That's today's mission.
What Happens When You Compare It to the Single-Item Price?
Here's where the twist comes in. Sometimes, buy-one-get-one actually costs more than buying items separately.
Making a nice-looking bundle package costs money too, and that cost gets quietly added to the price.
Line up the two per-item prices side by side, and the numbers will tell you right away which one's the better deal.
One comparison, and they become a kid who knows the real deal — the one even the store manager won't tell you.
What Changes When You Keep This Up?
Once a child has done the division just one time, they start looking for the numbers before the sticker, from then on.
This habit carries over outside the store too. At the stationery shop, at the bookstore — they check the per-item price the same way.
This isn't just about saving money. It's about gaining a whole new way of seeing numbers.
Once the habit sticks, they become a kid who sees the numbers first, for life.
Tyler (name changed) used to toss anything with a Buy-One-Get-One sticker straight into the cart, no questions asked.
He'd never once looked at the price tag.
After building the habit of checking, he was about to buy two bundles when he did the division on his fingers instead of reaching for a calculator.
The moment he realized the per-item price was actually higher than buying them separately, his face changed to pure surprise.
In the end, he picked out two single items instead.
Now, Tyler looks at the numbers before he looks at the sticker.
From the moment he started looking past the sticker to the real numbers hiding underneath, Tyler's grocery trips changed for good.
